TOMORROW’S POWER
A FILM BY AMY MILLER

Canada, 2017, Writer-Dir. Amy Miller, Documentary, 76 mins, English w/ English subtitles, Rated: NR (R)

Across three regions—Colombia, Germany, and Gaza—communities are fighting back against economic and environmental crises with resilience and ingenuity. In Colombia’s war-torn Arauca province, where oil fuels conflict, locals defy the odds by building peace from the ground up. In Germany, activists take on powerful industries, pushing for a complete shift away from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Meanwhile, in Gaza, where power outages threaten lives daily, medical professionals turn to solar energy to keep hospitals running and save lives. These powerful stories reveal how ordinary people, in the face of immense challenges, take extraordinary steps to reclaim control over their futures, proving that change is possible—even in the most difficult circumstances. This documentary is a gripping testament to courage, hope, and resistance.

We extend our gratitude to the writer-director for offering this impactful film with us!

SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS (original title: Ukrainian: Тіні забутих предків)

Directed by Sergei Parajanov, USSR, 1965

With: Ivan Mykolaichuk, Larisa Kadochnikova, Tatyana Bestayeva

Overview: Based on the 1911 novel Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by the Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, Parajanov’s film adaptation is considered to be the most internationally heralded Ukrainian film in history and a classic of Ukrainian magical realist cinema. It was acclaimed for its rich use of costume and colour and described as an “avant-garde, extravagant, sumptuous saga” and a “haunting work” that combined folk songs and atonal music.

Synopsis: In a Carpathian village, Ivan falls in love with Marichka, the daughter of his father’s killer. When tragedy befalls her, his grief lasts months; finally, he rejoins the colorful life around him, marrying Palagna. She wants children but his mind stays on his lost love. To recapture his attention, Palagna tries sorcery, and in the process comes under the spell of the sorcerer… The lively rhythms of village life, the work and the holidays, the pageant and revelry of weddings and funerals, the change of seasons, and nature’s beauty give proportion to Ivan’s tragedy.
The film will be presented by Dr. Alexander Pereverzev. And the copy is a beautifully restored one.

Original version in Ukrainian with Engl. Subtitles, duration 1h.37’ (color)

Venice Architecture Film Festival 2023

The Power of Utopia: Living with Le Corbusier in Chandigarh Switzerland, 2023, Dir. Thomas Karrer & Karin Bucher, Documentary-Architecture, 84mins, German-French-English w/ English subtitles, Rated: NR (G)

Le Corbusier had created Chandigarh, the capital city of both Punjab and Haryana. His vision was that of a humane and just city that would allow for the harmonious interaction of man and nature.

Chandigarh is a synthesis of the arts and a bold utopia of modernity. In this award-winning film, on the 70th anniversary of the city, the directors accompany residents – artists, architects, social workers, restaurant owner on their daily life through the city and seeks out settings and scenes revealing the inspiring interplay of the utopian and the everyday. It is a multi-layered portrait of Le Corbusier’s conception, a city created in a time of unrest, resettlement, and the Partition of India, and now stands for progress and a newly emerged democracy.

This This screening is made possible by generous sharing by the film makers, facilitated by the Embassy of Switzerland in India and Bhutan under the initiative Switzerlandindia 75 and AVI-Switzerland.

The directors will be present online for a post screening Q&A.

A very special film: Don’t Miss the film and the O&A!

If you like to discuss, share and learn more about films and Cinema, we invite you to our this chapter led by Philippe May on “THE GENIUS OF ORSON WELLES”

Overview: Orson Welles was a talented actor, a very creative director and scriptwriter who left an immense mark in the history of cinema. “Citizen Kane”, his first movie, is often quoted as the best film ever made – arguably for good reasons. Welles’ constant struggles for creative and artistic control made him also an early outsider of the Hollywood studios. He then headed to Europe where he signed there other masterpieces like his adaptation of “The Trial” by Franz Kafka, presented by Aurofilm Friday evening in MMC. With the support of movie clips and archives, we will explore the eclectic filmography, career and life of this exceptional artist.

— Philippe’s presentation and the open discussion will therefore start directly as there is no specific screening apart from the prepared clips.

Philippe, an active Aurofilm collaborator, is an IT engineer, an Auroville forester and discernant film-lover.
