Interview: Finding Joy in the Unknown https://auroartworld.org/interview-and-film-emergence-magazine/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=interview-and-film-emergence-magazine Tue, 02 Nov 2021 08:08:43 +0000 https://artservice.auroville.org/?p=25393 Finding Joy in the Unknown an interview with Dara McAnulty

“I don’t know what the future will be, but I absolutely know that things that give us joy in this world, especially the natural world, are essential for everything.”

Dara McAnulty is a teenage autistic author, naturalist, and conservationist from Northern Ireland. After several years of writing his blog, Naturalist Dara, he published his debut book, Diary of a Young Naturalist, when he was fourteen years old. The book won the 2020 Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing and Book of the Year for the Narrative Non-fiction British Book Awards in 2021.

In this interview, Emergence Executive Editor Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee speaks to Dara—now seventeen years old—about his book and his approach to living a life immersed in and guided by the living world. Wise beyond his years, Dara discusses his identity as an autistic person, the solace and comfort he has always found in nature, the role of the artist in envisioning a different future, and the great necessity of staying rooted in joy.

Interview: Jessica Namakkal on what Auroville tells us about the ‘end of colonialism and empire’

Would Auroville, the “utopian” town outside Pondicherry that over the years has attracted many foreign and Indian spiritual seekers, be where it was if not for French colonialism? No, argues historian Jessica Namakkal in Unsettling Utopia The Making and Unmaking of French India, and it is important to understand why.

“Auroville is not a French space per se, but that it came into existence through French colonial institutions. The reason it appears as a postcolonial and not a colonial space is because of the success France has had in depicting French India as a space of positive influence,” Namakkal writes. “In and near Pondicherry, the Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville serve as examples of how liberal discourse rooted in multiculturalism, spirituality, equality, and utopianism has displaced local Tamil populations from both land and history, time and space.” Advertisement

In Unsettling Utopia, Namakkal – who is an assistant professor of the practice in international comparative studies, gender, sexuality, and feminist studies; and history at Duke University – examines the complex nature of Pondicherry (now known as Puducherry) as a “minor” colony, that was often defined in contrast to the much larger space of British India next to it, and what that has meant for its inhabitants.

I spoke to Namakkal about “minor” histories, the complicated identities of post-colonised subjects, what she calls “settler utopianism” and the need to decolonise history.

I wanted to have print copies available too but I did not manage the printing before the lockdown.

As people are stuck at home it may be a good time to read. The idea with the book is that it is for 3 (or so) year olds and up but also interesting for the reader.

Hopefully you find it interesting.
