Aurofilm Screening: “THE SEVENTH SEAL” – 1 April https://auroartworld.org/aurofilm-screening-the-seventh-seal-1-april/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=aurofilm-screening-the-seventh-seal-1-april Tue, 29 Mar 2022 17:14:17 +0000 https://artservice.auroville.org/?p=32976
  • When: Friday 1 April, 8:00 PM
  • Where: Multi Media Centre Auditorium (Mmc, Town Hall)
  • “THE SEVENTH SEAL”

    Director: Ingmar BERGMAN, Sweden, 1957

With: Gunnar Björnstrand, Max von Sydow, Bibi Andersson, …

Overview: Hailed as one of the greatest movies of all time – an undisputable classic of world cinema – for decades now. The title refers to a passage from the Book of Revelation, beginning with the words “And when the Lamb had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.”

Set during the devastating Black Death that wiped out more than one-third of the population of Europe, the film traces the earthly and spiritual journey of a medieval knight returning home from horrific crusades in far-off lands. Wreaking in guilt and futility, the knight confronts death in all its guiles and at every bend of life and in every contemptuous manifestation, without a hint of hope or redemption…

This 1957 film from Sweden, established its director, Ingmar Bergman, as the great artist of cinema, and as an eloquent voice for old-age spiritual questions about the meaning and purpose of life, and about the whims and certainty of death.

Introduced by Prof. Sehdev Kumar as part of his series, “International Film Classics and the Human Condition” in collaboration with Aurofilm. Short discussion and comments after the screening. Original Swedish version, with English subtitles – Duration: 1h36’

Covid 19, please follow the current SOP at MMC, use of MASK   is still mandatory!

Contest: Auroville Through Your Eyes by AVI USA – Last Date 5 October https://auroartworld.org/contest-auroville-through-your-eyes-by-avi-usa-last-date-5-october/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=contest-auroville-through-your-eyes-by-avi-usa-last-date-5-october Tue, 28 Sep 2021 08:48:01 +0000 https://artservice.auroville.org/?p=24785 A Photo/Story Contest Hosted by AVI USA September 21st through October 5th

Photographs help tell the story of Auroville’s resilience, humanity and beauty. When we think of Auroville, we often think of images like that of tree lined landscapes, Matrimandir, it’s Gardens, or the Solar Kitchen. However, the Auroville that many of us know is an experience outside of these polished images and is far more personal.

If you or someone you know has images of a more personal Auroville, the one that often goes unseen, we invite you to share them with AVI USA and our followers . Take us on a walk down dusty roads and cycle paths and share your photos and the stories they convey. Three winners will be chosen from our entrants based on engagement level and quality of their posts. In the spirit of sharing, our winners will have the opportunity to choose an Auroville Service Unit or Activity to receive a donation from AVI USA in their name.

    How to Participate:

    1. Head to facebook and post your own picture with a description of the memory it conveys to the discussion page of the online event.
    2. Click on the above link and engage with the gallery of pictures and memories posted by others – like, comment, and share away!
    3. Send a photo/story via email to alana@aviusa.org with “Auroville Through Your Eyes” in the subject line. Your picture and memory will be posted by AVI USA directly to the page.

We look forward to seeing Auroville through your eyes!

‘Aangall’ – A Tamil Retro Version

The source of inspiration for this song challenge is the iconic German song titled Männer by Herbert Grönemeyer, asking

What makes a man a man?

This song has been sung widely in German parties since its release in 1984.

‘Men buy women, rough on the outside, soft on the inside’ doesn’t seem to be from another era, but still resonates even today.

A Tamil retro-version of the Original song will be the ‘curtain raiser / cover song’ which we hope will open discussions and invite young musicians to respond in whichever way they feel appropriate and inspired by the Tamil-version of the German-original. The Tamil Cover-song of the German original has been composed and rendered by playback singer Anand Aravindakshan.

New Community Storytelling Event with Photographer Bear Guerra
“There are two people in every picture,” said photographer Ansel Adams. “The photographer and the viewer.” I love this statement. A single photograph can reveal new worlds. It can tell a rich, complex, and often compelling story, providing an artifact for the world. A photograph can also provide a unique view of the photographer’s world as well as offer a window to explore our own points of view.

Join us in our next community storytelling event, Thursday, May 7th at 11am/PST, to discuss the art of photography with photographer Roberto Bear Guerra. Bear’s work documents globalization, development, and social justice issues. You can find his photo essays—“La Carretera: Life and Change Along Peru’s Interoceanic Highway” and “A Possible River”—in our library. His captivating photographs explore the relationship between human and natural landscapes as well as the destructive impacts on people and places caused by the impacts of modernization. Bear is currently the photo editor for High Country News Magazine.

During the webinar, we’ll view Bear’s photography and he will share the inspiration and intention behind his work. We’ll also explore curriculum connections to art, English language arts, social studies, and science. For those of you whose students are entering our student photography contest, Document Your Place on the Planet, Bear will share a few tips on how to take a good photograph.

We encourage students, educators, families, and photography lovers to join us for this free event. Bring your questions to the conversation! If you can’t join us, please do register and we’ll send you the recording. Closed captioning and sign language interpreters will be available.

I hope you can join us.
