We’re excited to invite you to our Primitive Mycology 101 Workshop at the Ecology Action Lab Palmyra – this Saturday March 15th from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.

Here’s what we’ve got planned:

– Learn about fungi and their importance in the ecosystem and ways they benefit society.
– ⁠Get to explore hands on low tech Myco-techniques to grow Fungi.
– ⁠Live Fungi demonstration of simple Myco-techniques on easy to find materials.
– ⁠field visit of our myco-restoration site and fruiting room at Aurobrindavan for a glimpse of EAL’s on-site work

This Primitive Mycology workshop is a chance to connect and learn about cool way to grow fungi at home and other stuff happening at the lab.

A 52-minute documentary on Auroville, in English, made in 2002 for Swiss TV by Laurence Bolomey and Harry Haener. 

The doco presents Auroville through a number of its residents  — Afsaneh, Arumugan, Bettina, Bhaga, Deepti, Diego, Gilles G, Johnny, Joss, Kamala, Kanchina, R. Kanniappan, Liliana, Lucas D, Luigi Z, Marco F, Mauna, Philippe, Raman, Renu, Roy W, Shivaya, Valli  — and through observations by Prof. M.S. Swaminathan – UNESCO Chair in Eco-technology as well as by the late Prof. Albert Jacquard – Geneticist and professor of Human Ecology. It is interwoven with scenery from Kottakarai and Sanjeevnagar villages. 

We show it this week at the occasion of a short visit by Mr Haener who will be present at the viewing.

Located 1200 kilometres away from mainland India, the Andaman and Nicobar archipelagos are ecologically unique and severely threatened in equal measure. Applied research is therefore crucial, if we are to secure the ecological security of this unique archipelago.

The Rauf Ali Fellowship grants two awards worth up to ₹2,50,000 each annually for innovative ecological research situated in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.  Applications for the 2021 Rauf Ali Fellowship are now open. Further details can be found on the Apply now tab (deadline June 1st 2021).

These fellowships were envisioned by Rauf Ali, endowed by him in last will and testament, and are generously supported by Rauf Ali’s family.

Odyssey In Two Biospheres

When the first explorers gazed from their space capsule back to earth, they realized profoundly that our blue planet was beautiful and dynamic and it was alive. It was a transforming experience – one of love and an overwhelming feeling of being deeply connected to this biosphere while they transited remotely apart in their steel space shuttle. Their experience gave us the understanding that we live in one biosphere – we are part of it and its evolution. It is our home.

We have a similar story, although ours is not about going into space, it is about living in two biospheres. The first one is Biosphere 1 – our earth’s biosphere – the one that we are all born into and are part of. The second one is Biosphere 2 –- a 3.15 acre miniature world under sealed glass, -built in the Arizona desert – our life support system where we lived for two years. A perfect laboratory to study global ecology.

From September 26 1991 to September 26 1993, 8 of us – from the UK, Belgium & USA – embarked on a mission to live in this baby biosphere with other microbes, plants, fungi and animals. We knew how BIO2 was designed, where its boundaries reached, how finite its resources were, and in what ways our daily actions impacted this miniature world. We learned how to live with the evolving system and become stewards of its wellbeing.

This experience heralded a shift in our consciousness – similar to the one the astronauts experienced. We became part of this unique man-made biosphere. Our health was synonymous with the health of BIO2 – there was no separation.

Despite the interpersonal challenges between the crew, we were united in our care for BIO2. After all, we were part of it – its first inhabitants & co-creators. It was the ‘glue’ that held us together for we were not alone nor separated from one another.

Our journey in BIOSPHERE2 led us back home – home to our earth’s biosphere. The little world taught us to see with new eyes. We are one people – neighbors from each other’s back yard. We breathe the same air – nourish ourselves with the same water & food – and share the same earth, the fire of life on earth. It is our home – allof our home. How we learn to live intelligently together and with all life, is the most important thing for us to contemplate and act upon, because everything we do has an impact, for better or worse, on our planet and ourselves. Our future is in our hands.

The Mahabharata is one of the most important epics of the world, and like many of the other great myths, it too is an archetypal drama that is unfolding in each of us in our everyday lives. However, we are often unaware of this and play out habitual patterns of behaviour unconsciously. In this workshop we will delve into what the Pandava archetypes within us could be and how they are being expressed and suppressed in the different contexts we inhabit. This awareness brings along with it a possibility of a new realignment of energies and potentials within us.

Designed as a simple process based on Yoga, Theater and Process-work, it is accessible to people from any cultural background. Prior knowledge of the Mahabharata is useful but not mandatory. Participants need to be present for the entire duration of the workshop. The process involves a significant amount of theater, but nothing strenuous. Please wear clothes you are comfortable stretching in.

Submissions for residencies may take place in the period January 1st – December 31st 2018.
Proposals may run from one month up to one year – depending on the scope of the proposed project and available funding.
Applications can be submitted up until the deadline October 1st 2017, and will be reviewed by the Curatorial Board of the Spatial Sound Institute for selection in the programme.
