BODY MIND CENTERING IN CONTACT IMPRO
BUTOH & AUTHENTIC MOVEMENT

Living Layers is a five-day embodied research exploring the body through the lens of the five elements : Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Light.
Each day focuses on a living layer of experience: physicality, sensation, energy, connection, and vision.
The work is grounded in somatic practice, Body-Mind Centering, contact improvisation, and butoh-inspired movement research, with a strong relationship to nature, presence, and performance.
Rather than aiming for form, aesthetics, or technique, this intensive invites participants to explore movement as authentic expression : emerging from sensation, impulse, inner images, and lived experience.
The body is approached as a site of perception, memory, and creative intelligence, where biology, environment, and imagination continuously interact.

Through Contact Improvisation, we will dive into movement as an open-ended exploration of sometimes wild and athletic, sometimes quiet and meditative expression of ourselves.

Turning inwards, with a somatic approach, spending time with our inner landscapes, letting the outer and more larger expression appear from the sensations inside.

Some of the aspects of Contact Improvisation that we would be studying in this workshop are:

– communicating through weight and how it supports our movement in solo and in contact with other bodies.
– spirals and effortless movement together
– breathing, trusting and deep listening
– support, following and leading, momentum
– qualities that we wish to cultivate are listening, stillness, curiosity, fluidity, playfulness, spontaneity

Harmandeep Singh
Harman was touched and moved by the practice of Contact Improvisation 7 years ago, leading him to immerse Contact Improvisation into his lifestyle. In this journey of learning and research, he indulges in other movement practices including contemporary dance floor work, somatic practices, body work etc. He is intrigued by the art of facilitating, creating and holding spaces for collaborations of various art forms with CI. Harman’s inspiration to Contact Improvisation in different aspects of life is leading him to travel to different places, spaces and cultures while sharing the practice of CI along the way.

With a background that bridges classical technique and contemporary expression, Martin explores the guitar as both a percussive and lyrical instrument – his interpretations move seamlessly from intricate falsetas to moments of quiet reflection. His repertoire ranges from traditional palos to original compositions that reflect his own journey through the art form.

This performance invites listeners into the intimate dialogue between rhythm and emotion – a meeting point of passion, discipline, and improvisation that defines Flamenco at its core.

Dhani Muniz’s new group is a field for artistic horseplay with some of India’s most exciting musicians, as the leader’s brash, feral guitar playing and skeletal compositions (taken from his 2024 debut album Chimu Fiesta) fuel keyboardist Aman Mahajan’s endlessly imaginative, often disembodied reveries and the percussive octopus that is the dual-drummer team of Raul Mattia and Navneeth Krishnan. Playing wildly intense, often humorous sets that tease a merry-go-round of musical genres and worlds, TRAK takes the concepts behind improvisational music return to their original purposes- creating for the individual listener a feeling of weightlessness, a sense of being removed from time altogether, and the urge to listen not only with the ear, but with the entire body.

Our bodies hold stories—woven through movement, memory, and emotion. The Living Story is a one-day immersive workshop that invites you to explore your personal narrative through movement, art, and creative storytelling. Through gentle somatic exploration, improvisational movement, and expressive art-making, we will awaken the wisdom of the body, uncover hidden stories, and explore new ways to shape the narratives that define us.

This workshop is not about performance or technique—it is about discovery, self-expression, and the freedom to explore your personal journey in a supportive, creative space. Whether you are seeking deeper self-awareness, new creative tools, or a fresh way to engage with movement and art, this experience offers an embodied approach to storytelling that connects mind, body, and imagination.

No prior dance or art experience is needed—just a willingness to move, create, and explore.

Somya and Nikki are movement therapy facilitators trained by CMTAI (Creative Movement Therapy Association of India).
