Dear Friend,

The Saiva and Vaishnava bhakti literature in Tamil form a rich repository of religious, spiritual, cultural and historic knowledge. Written around the fifth to the ninth century CE, these were composed by the Saiva Nayanmars and Vaishnava Azhwars, poet-saints who traveled widely to sacred towns on pilgrimage, singing about their temples. The entire Indian sacred topography is measured by these verses that describe the city, the flora and fauna and the people of the lands the poets visited. These verses were a milestone in the development of Tamil literature and played a significant role in popularizing the language.

Prolific speaker and heritage enthusiast, Madhusudhanan Kalaichelvan introduces these important works and delves into what makes them special, in his Talk on “Tamil Bhakti Literature: An Introduction”.

The online Talk in English is at 5.30 pm IST on Saturday, September 7, 2024.

Article by Dinesh Varma, Published in The Hindu

In a synergy of shared goals, Auroville will launch a branch of SPIC MACAY (The Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth) on November 7 to enhance the human endeavour through the medium of art.

The chapter is being launched as part of the ongoing 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Sri Aurobindo with a rudra veena concert by maestro Ustad Bahauddin Dagar, who engages in the dhrupad genre, the oldest living vocal tradition of India with Vedic roots.

As a prelude to the opening, on November 4, the Ustad will perform at the Sri Aurobindo Auditorium for schoolchildren of Auroville and the bioregion. Also, beginning November 7, he will lead an intense four-day residential workshop with the Auroville Film Institute (AFI) for senior participants. “The residency is not only open to musicians, but also for practitioners of all arts. It is designed as a trans-disciplinary learning experience where participants learn the structural possibilities of all art forms, while learning about the structure of raag, specifically dhrupad,” said Rrivu Laha, AFI co-founder and creative director of the residency.

This art education programme involves an attempt to enrich the practice of cinematic arts by including learnings from other Indian classical arts. It marks the beginning of the SPIC MACAY collaboration, said Richa Hushing, AFI founder-film-maker.

The SPIC MACAY chapter in the universal township is the outcome of a partnership involving the Auroville Film Institute and the Bharat Nivas (the India Pavilion in Auroville). According to Auroville literature, this was the second significant development that The Mother undertook in 1971, the same year when she set in motion the work on the most important and timeless icon of Auroville — the Matrimandir.

    A shared vision

The entities have come together on the basis of a shared vision around cultural heritage. If the Bharat Nivas, with its Sri Aurobindo auditorium, was intended to become a model centre to showcase Indian culture in the light of Sri Aurobindo’s vision and “support creativity that endeavours to reach beyond the ordinary,” the AFI has positioned itself as the manifestation of the The Mother’s dream of having a “cinema studio, a cinema school….,” in Auroville dedicated to the cinema of awakening, “of courageous flights between dreams, realities and alternatives”.

In near-similar vein, the not-for-profit SPIC MACAY’s mission is to conserve and promote awareness of the rich and heterogeneous cultural tapestry among the youth through focus on classical arts with their attendant legends and philosophy, and to facilitate an awareness of their deeper and subtler values.

“The partnership with SPIC MACAY, which is a volunteer-driven movement promoting the intangible aspects of Indian cultural heritage of the kind envisioned by Bharat Nivas, will certainly pave the way for future programmes of high calibre,” said Tapas Bhatt, Bharat Nivas volunteer and programme coordinator.

Call for Application: International Call for Poetry, 2022 https://auroartworld.org/call-for-application-international-call-for-poetry-2022/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=call-for-application-international-call-for-poetry-2022 Tue, 08 Feb 2022 10:34:06 +0000 https://artservice.auroville.org/?p=29474 Madness: An Anthology of World Poetry

    Submission Deadline: 30th August 2022

World Poetry Movement-Nepal, in collaboration with RedPanda Books, a publication partner in Kathmandu, is soliciting poems from poets around the world on the theme of madness for a global poetry anthology. It is our pleasure that Society of Nepali Writers in English, Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature, Asian Center for Humanities, 100 Thousand Poets for Change, and Movimiento Poetas del Mundo have also joined us as our poetry partners.

Why poetry on madness? The earth is our common home. Mountains, rivers, land, and the political and economic system governing this world should have been used for the benefit of all living beings including humankind. But, the reality is scarily different! World political leaders have turned into power mongers. Economic and social systems have been largely manipulated by the capitalists in their cravings for profits. Unstoppable desires for physical development have led to the destruction of natural ecology resulting in depletion of ozone layers, melting of glaciers, and increasing global temperature. The consequence is millions of people are displaced from their homelands for political, social, economic, and/or environmental catastrophes. These catastrophes do not come one and alone but are reinforcing one another at various layers and degrees.

We think that the concept of “madness” can largely connect to these complex phenomena because we are doomed to suffer the present day „inhumanity‟ due to the power-driven madness of the politicians, profit-driven madness of the capitalists, desire-driven madness of the consumers, and the like. It is relevant to refer to Michael Foucault‟s idea that

madness as such does not exist as an independent entity. It only exists in relationship to

different discourses. Foucault believed that madness can be understood through the study of social processes. For this anthology, we propose “madness” as a creative lens to reflect on diverse issues ranging from capitalism and social justice to democracy and human rights; physical development and climate change to poverty, migration, and

refugees; gender, sexuality, and social minorities to several other cross-cutting issues.

    Submission Guidelines

    1. Theme and Format: Poets are invited to submit one to maximum three poems reflecting on any strands of“madness” as explained above. Poems should be typed on a word document in Times New Roman, Font size 12, with single spacing. The poems should be followed by a brief bio in no more than 100 words including her/his nationality and previously published works.
    2. Language: Submissions are accepted only in the English language. Submissions of poems translated into English from any other language are also acceptable. But such submissions should mention the full name of the translator and the source language.
    3. Originality: We encourage sending unpublished poems. But if you have published poems that you consider very strong to the given theme, you can send them with appropriate credit to the earlier publication. Once you send such poems, we assume that you give us the copyright to republish them. Any copyright issue in such a case will be the sole responsibility of the poet herself/himself.
    4. Submission Fee: There is NO fee for submission. (WPM-Nepal is a part of a global movement of poets working voluntarily to promote social justice through poetry, and cannot afford to financially remunerate the poets. But we will be happy to send author‟s copy to all the poets included in the anthology.)
    5. Mailing/Postal Address: Please include a full mailing/postal address at the end of your word document so that

we can send a copy of the publication to the poets included in the anthology.
    6. Copyright: Copyright of the individual poems shall remain in the author of the respective poems. In the

anthology form, the copyright shall be with the editor and/or the publisher of the anthology. 7. Publication Timeline:

    (i) Submission Deadline: 30th August 2022; (ii) Selection Notification: Poems selected for the anthology will be notified by the end of October 2022; (iii) Proposed Publication Date: December 2022

    8. Submission Method: Submissions should be sent through email communication as a separate word file attachment to the following address: Keshab Sigdel (Editor), Email: poetrymovement.nepal@gmail.com

[About the Editor: Keshab teaches poetry at Central Department of English, Tribhuvan University. He is a published poet and is also associated with Society of Nepali Writers in English and World Poetry Movement.]

    • When: 06:30 PM – 07:30 PM, Thursday, 28 October, 2021
    • Where: Zoom. Click here to register for the presentation on Zoom. The discussion will also be streamed live on IFA Facebook page – no prior registration is required to join the live streaming.

Join us for a poetry performance and an artist talk by Himali Singh Soin on her book, titled we are opposite like that, a composition of a series of poems, historical documents, navigational records, calligrams, logograms, topological design elements and fictional mythologies based in the Polar Regions. Featuring a non-human protagonist Ice, Himali writes fictional mythologies to address the politics of ecology, language, and perspectives from the Global South. Ice, here, acts as an agent of resistance against colonialism and techno-capitalist greed for natural resources from the Poles.

Himali’s project challenges conventions by rethinking the boundaries of mythology and sci-fi, and in doing so, attempts to push the boundaries of literature as well. Her project tries to bring the literary and the performative together in its unique, evocative form.

Himali will be joined by Anshika Varma to discuss the creative process of making the book.

Himali Singh Soin is a writer and artist who works between London and Delhi. She uses metaphors from outer space and the natural environment to construct imaginary cosmologies.

Anshika Varma is a photographer and curator based in Delhi. She has an interest in personal, collective and mythical histories.

Himali Singh Soin received a grant from IFA in 2018 under the Arts Practice programme.

Call for Artists: Auroville ItiSoma – Advaita Festival https://auroartworld.org/call-for-artists-auroville-itisoma-advaita-festival/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=call-for-artists-auroville-itisoma-advaita-festival Tue, 19 Oct 2021 10:25:22 +0000 https://artservice.auroville.org/?p=25079 A dimension where all kinds of frequencies unify in a universal vibration.”

Presenting the grassroots and cultural heritage of Auroville’s pagan community – The Auroville ItiSoma – Advaita Festival is an experimental fusion space to converge vibrational and bodily experiences through performing and visual art, along with the freshness of organic as well as electronic frequencies.

At a time in the year when most cultures have cause to celebrate, we imagine a celebration, agnostic of a specific culture, religion, or society, of a community crafted with no <rigid rules and rituals> of how people should be and act, but as a reflection of the community’s ethos and culture as it has organically developed since the Dream’s inception.

    • When: 31st October 2021 (Sunday)
    • Where: The Youth Center

Call for Artists to come and join in the afternoons to work on the art brief for the fair. Youth Center is funding this fair and are only capable of giving very small budgets to the artists to buy art materials if they need something special otherwise we would appreciate it if they could bring their own art supplies.

    Theme:

The overriding themes of the festival are coming together and unity in diversity. Although the names that we give to our festivals and the rituals that we perform may be different, we are all celebrating the same thing. The origin of all of the festivals (Diwali, Halloween, Samhain and Dia de los muertos) is the celebration of the end of the harvest, thanking nature for what has been given to us and the turn of the season.

The festival is split into 3 primary theme zones and fusion theme “festival vibe” is present for common areas. A 4 theme “dia de los muertos” is present to commemorate our gone, inspired by the mexican celebrations of Halloween

    Diwali:
The festival usually lasts five days, it is one of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance”.The festival is widely associated with Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity, with many other regional traditions connecting the holiday to Sita and Rama, Vishnu, Krishna, Yama, Yami, Durga, Kali, Hanuman, Ganesha, Kubera, Dhanvantari, or Vishvakarman. Furthermore, it is, in some regions, a celebration of the day Lord Rama returned to his kingdom Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana after defeating Ravana in Lanka and serving 14 years of exile. In the lead-up to Diwali, celebrants will prepare by cleaning, renovating, and decorating their homes and workplaces with diyas (oil lamps) and rangolis (colorful art circle patterns).During Diwali, people wear their finest clothes, illuminate the interior and exterior of their homes with diyas and rangoli, perform worship ceremonies of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth, light fireworks, and partake in family feasts, where mithai (sweets) and gifts are shared. Diwali is also a major cultural event for the Hindu, Sikh and Jain diaspora.

    Samhain:
The festival is one of the four quarter days associated with Gaelic seasonal festivals. Historically, it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man, similar festivals were held by the Brittonic Celtic people, it marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the ‘darker half’ of the year
Samhain is believed to have Celtic pagan origins.early celtic literature says that Samhain was marked by great gatherings and feasts, and was when the ancient burial mounds were open, which were seen as portals to the Otherworld. Some of the literature also associates Samhain with bonfires and sacrifices. It was when cattle were brought down from the summer pastures and when livestock were slaughtered and special bonfires were lit. Samhain was a liminal or threshold festival, when the boundary between this world and the Otherworld thinned, meaning the Aos Sí (the ‘spirits’ or ‘fairies’) could more easily come into our world. At Samhain, they were appeased with offerings of food and drink, to ensure the people and their livestock survived the winter. The souls of dead kin were also thought to revisit their homes seeking hospitality, and a place was set at the table for them during a Samhain meal. Mumming and guising were part of the festival from at least the early modern era, whereby people went door-to-door in costume reciting verses in exchange for food. The costumes may have been a way of imitating, and disguising oneself from, the Aos Sí. Divination was also a big part of the festival and often involved nuts and apples. It is believed that Samhain and All Saints day influenced each other, and eventually syncretised into the modern Halloween.

    Halloween:
The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.
