Looking at any history from a practitioner’s point of view, there lies the possibility to collectively churn and map thoughts on praxis instead of walking down a museum hallway. As a practitioner one gets a chance to have a nuanced understanding of their present with its complexity of form and subjects. Also a possibility of sharpening their craft vocabulary and locating their praxis. From the post avant-garde practice, one can also look at history as a diverse palette of cultural archives and initiate a formal dialogue through their practice.

The 4-day session will see a phase by phase evolution of major trends and traditions in India Documentary filmmaking that span over a century, as India navigates through its major sociopolitical phases.

Description: Join us for an illustrated talk by renowned art historian and former museum director, Prof. Asok Kumar Das. The talk will provide a glimpse into the significant role of flora, fauna, and gardens in Mughal art. Alexander Pereverzev was born in St.Petersburg, Russia. He was associated with painter Nicholas Roerich’s organizations and museums in Russia in the 1990s. Having studied Indian languages at the St. Petersburg State University, he went on to study Sanskrit in India, at the University of Delhi, obtaining a PhD degree in 2010. His professional interests include Indian philosophy. He likes travelling and visiting places of historical and religious importance, particularly in the Indian subcontinent. He works at Savitri Bhavan, Auroville, and is also an avid film enthusiast!

Pavel Lungin fait partie des cinéastes ayant redonné à l’orée des années 90 un peu de lustre au cinéma russe.

Synopsis: Pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, le marin, Anatoly, et son capitaine, Tikhon, sont capturés par les Nazis alors qu’ils embarquent leur barge et leur remorqueur qui transporte une cargaison de charbon. Les Nazis font sauter le bateau mais Anatoly survit et est sauvé par des moines Orthodoxes Russes. Il se remêt et travaille sur une petite île monastique du nord de la Russie. Sa vie inhabituelle et sa conduite un peu bizarre étonnent souvent les moines, tandis que les pélerins qui visitent l’île croient qu’il a le pouvoir de guérir, d’exorciser les démons et de prévoir l’avenir … L’île a clôturé le 63e Festival International de Films de Venise et a également reçu l’appréciation du Patriarche Alexis II de l’Église Orthodoxe de Russie.

The exhibition will open at 5.30 p.m. on 15 May at the exhibition hall on the first floor at the French Institute of Pondicherry. We hope you can join us for the opening. The exhibition will be on view between 10.00 a.m. and 07.00 p.m. everyday from 16 May to 31 May.

This exhibition is a culmination of the work Karthik, Devarati, and Sujeet have done as Project Coordinators of a Foundation Project, implemented by India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) under their Archives and Museums programme, in collaboration with Institut Français de Pondichery (IFP). This Foundation Project is made possible with support from Tata Trusts, with the corpus interest of an earlier seed grant. The poster and the exhibition have been designed by Mehar Khurana.

Sleepwalker Archives tries to engage with the plenitude of archival material they have encountered at IFP in the form of archival photographs, herbarium specimens, card catalogues, maps, instruments, and a range of miscellanea. In the process, it explores the possibility of animating connections between these objects and the worlds contained in them while reading them joyously and in a spirit of play.

International Open Call Towards BIENALSUR 2025 5th edition

The General and Artistic Direction of BIENALSUR, organized by the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTREF), a public university in Argentina, invites artists and curators of any nationality to submit artistic and/or curatorial projects. The projects selected in this call will be part of the fifth edition to be held in 2025 in various venues, museums, cultural centres, universities and non-traditional spaces in large cities and small towns in different countries.

The International Call towards BIENALSUR 2025 will remain open from Monday, March 4th to Monday, April 8th, 2024. The application can be submitted online, through a platform available in Spanish and English. Proposals that align with contemporary theories of art and culture, seeking to rethink, problematize, or offer alternative perspectives and approaches to the multiplicity of vital experiences of our time, are welcomed.

BIENALSUR upholds the right to culture and one of its aims is to contribute to the creation of cultural citizenship from the south of the world. Its particular format and its collaborative and networking approach encourages the arts of each region to be present from their own singularities and relative positions. It fosters the development of critical thinking with autonomy with respect to canonical narratives and alternative practices within the world of art and culture in its modes of production, exhibition, circulation and consumption.

How does the Open Call work?

The presentation of artistic and/or curatorial projects for BIENALSUR 2025 will be submitted through an online platform. 

The application is free of charge and is open to 4 (four) categories: individual artist, group artist, individual curator and group curator. For each of these categories only one submission is allowed.

Based on the projects received, the International Curatorial Council of BIENALSUR will identify and evaluate the Curatorial Axes for the 2025 edition. This will enable the consolidation of a cartography that is closely related to the concerns and experiences of artists, curators and curators worldwide. This selection will give rise to the projects for the fifth edition of BIENALSUR 2025, 10 years after its creation.

Synopsis et vue d’ensemble : Le narrateur, accompagné d’un visiteur étranger : le Marquis de Custine -écrivain français qui fera découvrir la Russie à de nombreux Européens en 1843- visitent le fabuleux musée de l’Hermitage à Saint-Pétersbourg. Sans être vus (sont-ils des esprits ?) ils rencontrent des héros de l’histoire russe, comme le tsar Pierre le Grand ou le poète Alexandre Pouchkine. Le film se concentre sur trois siècles d’histoire russe -de Pierre le Grand au tsar Nicolas II. Cette oeuvre de fiction est un tour de force cinématographique étonnant : tourné en un unique plan de 96 minutes (donc sans coupure ou montage), avec une distribution de 2000 acteurs et figurants, elle nous emmène dans l’un des plus grands musées du monde, montrant de véritables œuvres d’art de 33 salles et explorant leur signification dans un contexte plus large. Elle ne se soucie pas de la chronologie mais chaque court épisode est un aperçu fantastique d’un monde sauvage, riche, souvent terrifiant mais toujours fascinant…
L’arche Russe est largement considéré comme l’un des plus grands films russes de tous les temps.

Through a series of training activities and discussions, from online talks to in-person photography #workshops, the six participants – in collaboration with six participants in Glasgow – will be guided to the production of their own #exhibition that will be displayed in Kanike (Bengaluru) and Street Level Photoworks (Glasgow), as well as online and on social media.

Borderlands is an intimate exploration of how everyday lives intertwine with both personal and political boundaries across the Indian subcontinent. It tells the stories of six characters who live along the national borders of our country on the edges of Pakistan, Nepal and Myanmar. Divided families meet, love blossoms across borders, and traffickers get caught in this slice-of-life documentary.

Join us for a screening of Borderlands, followed by the film’s Director, Samarth Mahajan, and Associate Director, Nupur Agarwal, in conversation with Mahima Venugopal, at The Courtyard.

Tune in to a conversation between the author and museum professional, Priyanka Seshadri to hear about the processes that were involved in putting this living archive together. Through the course of their discussion, the speakers will dive into the importance of these enduring stories and the hidden knowledge shared by descendants of those who witnessed the partition, and what the partition means for them in the contemporary context.

This event is part of MAP’s series Beyond Borders. This August and September, MAP commemorates the 75th year of India’s independence, with events around the theme Beyond Borders. Over the next two months, we explore and critique the concept of borders via multiple registers – history, geography, identity, and migration. Witness global practitioners and experts in conversation with each other, reimagining the meaning and significance of borders. Join us as we blur the boundaries between different genres and media, and explore people and spaces that transgress imagined borders.

Lords of the Deccan: Southern India from the Chalukyas is a new history of medieval India. Weaving together art history, military history, global trade and literature from the period, the book explores medieval Indian lives in all their emotional complexity and striking humanity and ambition. In a departure from earlier historiography about the period, Lords of the Deccan attempts to read art historical materials alongside epigraphical sources to uncover new nuances and layers of meaning.

Join the book’s author, Anirudh Kanisetti, as he introduces the vast world of medieval India and how sculpture and architecture reveal the ambitions, lives and politics of their makers and patrons.

Exploring the role art collectives play in transforming cities and its residents

Murals, sculptures, installations – public art in all its diverse forms is deeply rooted in visualising the invisible by locating itself in everyday encounters. Public art also provides a physical and visual subversion to passerbys, encouraging them to look at the site of the installation through a new lens and learn beyond what is obviously visible. Through the years, many collectives have come up across the country helping street artists forge connections with cities and their various inhabitants through place-making projects.

Join speakers Poornima Sukumar, Ajay Raghavan and Giulia Ambrogi in conversation with Janet Orlene as they explore the role art collectives play in transforming cities and its residents through public art, how both the process and artworks serve to facilitate engagement in these spaces, and how they provide new access points to the art world.

DIRECTOR’ S CUT: Sabyasachi Mukherjee in Conversation with Kamini Sawhney

A glimpse into how the institution of the museum is being reimagined and reinvented today.

This session features Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Director General of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) in Mumbai, in conversation with the Director of MAP, Kamini Sawhney.

A frequent lecturer worldwide and an active member of many art professional committees, Mukherjee has been a fellow of the Nehru Trust, Charles Wallace India Trust and the Salzburg Global Seminar. Under Mukherjee’s leadership from 2007, CSMVS has undergone extensive modernisation, including refurbishment of the Museum’s main building and the establishment of a conservation centre, a new Children’s Museum, an institutional archive, new galleries and educational initiatives. In 2010, in recognition of his initiatives, UNESCO awarded the Museum the 2010 Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

The Directors’ Cut series offers a glimpse into how the institution of the museum is being reimagined and reinvented today, and presents a unique opportunity to hear from reputed practitioners in museums around the world.

DEEP DIVE: Himalayan Visual Culture: Living Experiences

Explore traditional art forms and contemporary expressions from the Himalayan region with Elena Pakhoutova

Deep Dive is an in-depth exploration of global art, design, histories and knowledge that helps us better understand the evolution of cultures, of our place in the world and more.

In this episode, Elena Pakhoutova, Senior Curator, Himalayan Art at the Rubin Museum of Art, New York, will discuss the art from the Himalayan region, including traditional art forms and contemporary expressions. Outlining the importance of patronage, the role of religious teachers, artists, and other agents of change for cross-cultural exchange in the region, she will highlight examples of Tibetan, Nepalese, Bhutanese and closely related visual traditions.

VAICA 2 will be presented online over 4 weeks during 20 November to 18 December, 2021. Accessible to everyone, free of cost, viewers will have access to sets of thematically categorised video works that they can watch at their own pace through simply logging onto the VAICA website (www.vaica.org). The videos will be replaced every week by a new set. Each week concludes with a public discussion featuring one or more of the artists, a cultural critic or commentator, conducted along with the co-curators.

ART is LIFE: SOUNDFRAMES

MAP is delighted to invite you to celebrate the first anniversary of MAP’s digital launch, with the festival Art is Life: SoundFrames.

From 3rd to 5th December, please join us for a weekend of music where we explore the connections between music and the visual arts and their power to bring people together. The festival is in collaboration with the internationally renowned Berklee College of Music (Boston), who will present a set of immersive experiences including workshops, talks, and performances. Closer to home, we are also partnering with the Indian Music Experience (Bengaluru) on workshops, lectures and talks.

Be it contemporary or classical, folk, rock or pop, the festival includes well known artists across genres, genders and geographies, with something for everyone, whether you are 8 or 80!

Kochi Biennale Foundation, with the support of the Government of Kerala, presents a major contemporary art exhibition titled Lokame Tharavadu curated by Bose Krishnamachari.

Featuring works by over 250 artists who trace their roots back to Kerala, the large-scale survey exhibition will take place over five different venues in Alappuzha including Port Museum, Kerala State Coir Corporation, New Model Society, Eastern Produce Company Ltd. or The Alleppey Company Ltd., William Goodacre & Sons Pvt. Ltd. and the Durbar Hall, Ernakulam. A collection of works of each participating artist is exhibited, in an attempt to foreground each of their individual practices.

The core idea of this exhibition, Lokame Tharavadu or ‘the world is one family’, is drawn from the verses of a Malayalam poem written by Vallathol Narayana Menon, which appeals to the universal spirit of humanity. Set in these times of the Covid pandemic, the exhibition invokes the power of art to revive and resurrect the dejected human spirit.

What does the museum-going culture in India look like today? What are people’s perceptions of the ‘museum’ and what it has to offer? How has the pandemic affected engagement with the arts and culture sector in India? 

MAP in collaboration with ReReeti Foundation conducted audience research to hear from people across age demographics about how they engage with arts and culture and what factors act as barriers to engagement. 

To mark the launch of this report, join us for a panel discussion with Tejshvi Jain, Rashmi Dhanwani, Carol Scott and Carolina Artegiani where they highlight the need for more audience research in the arts sector and how this data can be harnessed effectively. They will also touch upon key findings of the report and provide insights into how people perceive museums and what they seek out of encounters with them, in both the physical and digital spheres.

The unique lingo of Bengaluru is a palimpsest that tells us so much about the communities that have inhabited the city. Tracking its evolution, therefore, can help us understand the multicultural landscape of the city today. 

Bengaluru slang is getting renewed attention as the city’s influencers animate these words through their funny, light-hearted reels and posts. Why are the margins of so many Rajput paintings painted a brilliant red?  Dr. Kavita Singh (Professor of Art History at the School of Arts and Aesthetics of Jawaharlal Nehru University) presents a window into the rich and complex world of colour in miniature paintings.

Discover new shades of familiar colours in this illustrated talk that explores the symbolic meaning of the hues, the pigments that constitute them and the artists’ brilliant use of colour to convey narrative.

The Provocateurs

Two people, one artist: Shilpa Vijayakrishnan talks with the eccentric artist duo, Gilbert and George.

Art for all’ is the credo of the artist duo, Gilbert and George. United by their disdain for the formalist approach to sculpture, Gilbert Proesch and George Passmore met as college students at the St Martins School of Art, and have been living and creating together ever since. Their increasingly formal appearance marked by matching tweed suits juxtaposed with their loud, provocative, brightly-coloured artwork is what cultivates the distinctive public persona–Gilbert and George. 

Having explored many facets of human existence through their work including sex, religion, corruption, racial tension, addiction and death, the duo believes that art in every form exists to provoke. 

Join us in conversation with the duo as they speak to Shilpa Vijayakrishnan about their ever-expanding practice, distinctive style and approach to confronting a breadth of societal issues through their work.

Kochi Biennale Foundation, with the support of the Government of Kerala, presents a major contemporary art exhibition titled Lokame Tharavadu curated by Bose Krishnamachari.

Featuring works by over 250 artists who trace their roots back to Kerala, the large-scale survey exhibition will take place over five different venues in Alappuzha including Port Museum, Kerala State Coir Corporation, New Model Society, Eastern Produce Company Ltd. or The Alleppey Company Ltd., William Goodacre & Sons Pvt. Ltd. and the Durbar Hall, Ernakulam. A collection of works of each participating artist is exhibited, in an attempt to foreground each of their individual practices.

The core idea of this exhibition, Lokame Tharavadu or ‘the world is one family’, is drawn from the verses of a Malayalam poem written by Vallathol Narayana Menon, which appeals to the universal spirit of humanity. Set in these times of the Covid pandemic, the exhibition invokes the power of art to revive and resurrect the dejected human spirit.
