Still Here

Time, in the physical world, is one of the few universally shared dimensions—beyond ownership

or control, at least for the time being. Spiritually, however, I experience time as neither linear nor fixed, but as multidimensional and all-encompassing. It often feels supple and fluid. In my artistic
practice, time functions as a fundamental medium, shaping conception, process, and creation.
Establishing a conscious relationship with time is essential to transforming inspiration into form.

My ongoing series, A Time Trilogy, explores and visualizes these layered perceptions of time.
Drawing from Eastern landscape traditions such as Sansui (山水), my paintings dissolve the boundary between subject and background. Nature dominates the frame, while human presence is minimal or symbolic, emphasizing an inner nature and spiritual connection. These landscapes
reflect my inner states and invite the viewer into the work, rather than positioning them as a
distant observer.

This approach is central to Archaeology of Transcending Light (A.O.T.L.), in which I reimagine landscape through contemporary abstraction, inspired by introspection and an inward process of concentration. The act of finding the Self feels like an archaeological excavation—as if
uncovering ancient treasures. In this sense, past and future appear fluid and, ultimately, interchangeable.

The Japanese concept of Ma (間)—the space between—also deeply informs my practice.
I understand Ma as a realm where duality comes to rest, where silence, space, and subtle perception allow meaning to emerge. In Tibet, the intermediate state between life and death is called Bardo—a realm in which different forms of life force are encountered and engaged. I find
these cultural connections deeply resonant. This sensibility extends into my sound installations, which focus on atmosphere, frequency, and silence rather than structure, inviting deep listening and introspection.

Rooted in Eastern philosophy and informed by modern science, my work seeks a meeting point between spirituality and contemporary thought. This exhibition offers a contemplative space in which viewers may encounter stillness, expanded awareness, and the unseen dimensions of reality.

To The Mother of Auroville, the hibiscus was more than a flower — it was Nature’s aspiration toward the Divine: a spontaneous expression of devotion, beauty, and consciousness.

During Auroville’s birthday week, I warmly invite you to Hibiscules — a lens-art exhibition that reflects on the fragile microcosms held within a single moment.

BODY MIND CENTERING IN CONTACT IMPRO
BUTOH & AUTHENTIC MOVEMENT

Living Layers is a five-day embodied research exploring the body through the lens of the five elements : Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Light.
Each day focuses on a living layer of experience: physicality, sensation, energy, connection, and vision.
The work is grounded in somatic practice, Body-Mind Centering, contact improvisation, and butoh-inspired movement research, with a strong relationship to nature, presence, and performance.
Rather than aiming for form, aesthetics, or technique, this intensive invites participants to explore movement as authentic expression : emerging from sensation, impulse, inner images, and lived experience.
The body is approached as a site of perception, memory, and creative intelligence, where biology, environment, and imagination continuously interact.

TOUCH WOOD brings together pristine white porcelain forms soda-fired in Dana at Studio Mandala, with salvaged carpentry beams rescued from Auroville workshops and weathered by south India’s sun, rain, wind and vibe.

These weathered timbers meet crackled porcelain surfaces stamped with ancient scripts or scribbled with text from Sri Aurobindo’s Savitri, creating a dialogue between what one salvages and what one creates, following The Mother’s observation that nothing is ugly if it finds its rightful place.

These works celebrate the marks of transformation where opposing natures rest in unexpected harmony,
“…the sun-eyed children of a marvellous dawn”.

Playing the role of ourselves:
Discovering who we are through expressive arts
with Sakina

We will spend 8 hours of the weekend creating to the beat of our heart, exploring how we manifest parts of ourselves into artistic forms. The weekend will be packed with activities that will aid you in this process.

I’m Sakina and I am an anthropology major from UCLA, California. I live in Bangalore and am so excited to be in Auroville for this workshop series! I am diving into the expressive arts with Smart Studio’s FECAT program and that’s what brings me to you! Through this program, I’ve been training since January on how to become an expressive arts practitioner. And as a part of this course we offer these workshops to the public for free.

I love animals, the beach and nature and bringing art into the picture when things are empty. I am excited to be holding this workshop in Auroville where all these three things come together.

Ee Paa’s interpretation of the epic raises the uncomfortable but important question of civilisational progress – that no matter how modern our society might have become with advancements in technology and lifestyle, have societal power structures changed at all? Diving deep into the psychology of Kannagi, Kovalan and Madhavi, the play puts the spotlight on the oppressive nature of our gender power structure and the need, in today’s times, for a serious and critical examination of its consequences.

Shraddha’s production brings together rich theatrical elements integral to Silappadhigaram, highlighting the musicality of Ilango’s Tamil and blending it with the structure of Ee Paa’s play. This production is brought to stage with the vision that every frame is a painting and promises to be a visual and auditory delight!

Poetry stillpoint at Savitri Bhavan Garden

Wednesday October 8th 2025 at 4:21pm
A poetic expression in design— a living, visual embodiment of Invitation, a poem by Sri Aurobindo. The event begins with a brief sharing of context, followed by quiet, experiential time with the poetic art.

Meet at the open amphitheater in the Savitri Bhavan gardens (Saraswati Park). Please come prepared for a comfortable walk in the park. The poetry visual installation will be accessible within Savitri Bhavan working hours. Use the time and space as an invitation in nature, walks, journaling, reading, reciting and/or just being.

“…I was taken to Alipore and placed in a solitary cell. There I waited day and night for the voice of God within me, to know what He had to say to me, to learn what I had to do…I remembered that a month or more before my arrest, a call had come to me to put aside all activity, to go into seclusion and look into myself…I…could not accept the call. My work was very dear to me… he spoke to me again and said, “The bonds you had not the strength to break for you…I had another thing for you to do and it is for that I have brought you here… to train you for my work.”
Tales of Prison Life, Sri Aurobindo Ghose (1908-09)

Surya Performance Lab presents a new production: Darshan https://auroartworld.org/surya-performance-lab-presents-a-new-production-darshan/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=surya-performance-lab-presents-a-new-production-darshan Tue, 09 Sep 2025 12:22:32 +0000 https://auroartworld.org/?p=60898 This show is not just for watching, it watches you.

🗓12, 13, 14th September —🕗 7.30 PM @ 📍 CRIPA, Auroville

Darshan blends dance-theatre and visual arts.

It tells the story of a metamorphosis: that of a young sensitive man who has suffered bullying and remains trapped in his trauma. Out of breath, lost in darkness and totally isolated, he finds his way back to his own light, to his true nature and to the Cosmos.
The show invites the creative maternal principle, and the invisible forces that accompany metamorphosis.

It offers a hypnotic journey, a sensory and poetic experience in which vulnerability is transmuted into strength.
It explores themes of resilience, identity, and the redemptive power of unconditional love.

“Even in the abyss of night, he saw the flame.” Sri Aurobindo, Savitri

To make it accessible to children, the most effective entry point is through play. Our effort is to use theater games to explore children’s voices, sense of rhythm, body and mind coordination, and imagination. We achieve this by incorporating traditional games, playing in mud, and using nature as a backdrop. Through nature theater, children can understand and connect with trees, nature, and their own existence.
