On these warm days I offer an opportunity to play and create a world in a box filled with sand. This simple activity, know also as “Sandplay” can open up your imagination and intuition, to reveal your own unique living soul.

By recontextualizing these elements, the boundaries between the ordinary and the profound are blurred, inviting reflection on cycles of use, disposal, and renewal.

The process of reworking these materials speaks to the persistence inherent in both artistic and societal practices, while subtly critiquing systems of excess and disposability. Here, repetition is not simply the act of duplication, but an opportunity for transformation, offering a nuanced perspective on the potential for renewal within everyday life.

Sumanasa Foundation presents The Commissions Project.
The objective of the programme is to commission artists to think and work outside of their comfort zones, reflect on their practice, re-imagine structures within the form and engage with contemporary and changing ideologies of what art stands for.

We firmly believe that the journey and process of creation is as crucial as the eventual creation of art, and this project aims to support artists fiscally as well as through foundational resources to create and present work in a neutral space that allows for discussion and growth.

Artists will be selected by a panel of eminent individuals and present their work at a festival curated by Sumanasa. Artists will exhibit the documentation of their work from the ideation stage to the presentation stage and discussions will be held around the process of creation.

You can be a digital artist or creative of any kind — an illustrator, animator, character artist, video and sound engineer, special effects designer, typographer, product designer, environment artist, architect, interior designer, poster artist or an AI artist. The list is endless. All we ask is that: 

• You are a practising digital artist
• You are resident in India
• You should have showcased your works in the public realm, such as online or physical exhibition, or other editorial or commercial platforms
• You have experience using an iPad, tablet or similar technology, and are already using it as a core tool to create works or to forward your practice
• You are available to travel to India Art Fair in New Delhi between 8 to 12 February 2023

You can be as creative as you like with your response. It could be a digital collage, painting, illustration, animation, video, poem, poster or anything else. There are ten awards to be won in 2023 – two for Music (Rs. 60,000 each), two for Creative Writing in English (Rs. 50,000 each), one for Creative Writing in Kannada(Rs. 50,000), two for Photography (Rs. 50,000 each), two for Short Film (Rs 50,000 each) and one for Digital Art (Rs 50,000).

All submissions must be original and reach us by 30 September 2022 at the latest.

Indian citizens between the ages of 18 and 29 are eligible to apply.
