About the event

Join us to learn and practice hand embroidery, macrame, and crochet. Create beautiful textile pieces of any size while being guided in using needle and thread to make unique works.

We will support you by teaching step by step, and once you have learnt, you can continue creating pieces that may be shared or purchased in the future — spreading art-preneurship worldwide.

This movement aims to empower men and women through upskilling, while infusing consciousness into daily life.

Participants will be guided in using the needle and thread to create textile pieces of any size. Once you learn, your crafted works can become part of a larger movement, helping spread arti-preneurship—a model that empowers individuals by creating sustainable livelihoods through art.

This initiative supports men and women in developing new skills while bringing consciousness into their daily routine. It is about making, learning, and weaving together beauty, empowerment, and community.

Director’s Statement:

Layari Notes was one of the 16 projects selected for the IDF Academy Summer School 2013. This marked the first time Maheen and Miriam met in person in Amsterdam, despite working remotely for a long time—across borders, internet, and technology—on the film’s concept.

The film explores how music can transcend borders, fostering new dialogue amid political and cultural hostility.

The project was crowdfunded by over 100 supporters who resonated with the filmmakers’ vision of music as resistance.
It premiered at the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam (IDFA) and was nominated for the Alliance of Women in Film Journalism Award.

Both directors were also selected for the inaugural Global Media Makers Fellowship (USA State Department & Film Independent).

At the entrance of millions of homes, workplaces and temples across Tamil Nadu you will find precise geometric patterns drawn on the floor by Tamil women. In addition to being beautiful works of art, these designs, known as Kolams, are steeped in philosophical meaning, and are symbolic of the cycle of life.

Just before daybreak, these women wake up and begin the ritualistic process. It starts with the cleaning of the surface where the designs will be drawn, and sometimes involves lining the area with cow dung, which creates a uniform surface and is also considered to be cleansing in Hindu culture. Traditionally drawn using a dry rice flour mix known as Kolapodi, these days you will find people using chalk and other stone powders mixed with colours. There are no tools except the nimbleness of their hands. Using the thumb as the guide, these women are able to place the powder on the ground in swift motions, creating precise and perfect patterns just from memory.

I would like to invite you for a production by Adishakti, a play by the name “URMILA“ at Adishakti on the 1st of December, Sunday at 7:30 pm. As a principle of Adishakti, the entry is free, it is first come, first served and the Donations are welcome and would help us out a lot.

A brief of  “ Urmila” :

“Urmila” is a thought-provoking play that delves into the complex ethical and gender-related issues that have been woven into the fabric of society throughout history. Set in the ancient land of Ayodhya, the play centres on the character of Urmila from the Ramayana, a woman whose life is dramatically altered by a seemingly innocuous command from her husband, Lakshmana: “Sleep, my sleep.” This deceptively simple directive raises profound questions about autonomy, consent, and the price individuals, especially women, have paid for their obedience throughout time. Throughout history, the human body has been employed as a powerful symbol and metaphor for social protests. When traditional avenues for negotiation fail, individuals have resorted to their own bodies as a last resort to resist oppressive societal norms. Urmila finds herself in a situation where she is left with no agency to challenge the status quo, and she grapples with the notion of using her body as a form of protest to reclaim her sanity, her mind, and her very existence. Can Urmila envision a means to express her resistance without succumbing to the demand to “Sleep, my sleep”? Can her body become a message, a defiant statement of self-determination? Will she ever muster the courage to declare, “I won’t sleep,” when confronted with Lakshmana’s repeated command to slumber? The play explores the power dynamics inherent in the relationship between Urmila and Lakshmana, raising questions about consent, agency, and approval. Urmila’s journey represents a broader commentary on the struggles faced by individuals in different time periods and perhaps even in the future. “Urmila” It offers a compelling exploration of these themes in the context of ancient stories, making them relevant and thought-provoking for contemporary audiences.

Two years ago, I had an amazing opportunity to live in a nunnery in Ladakh for some weeks. It was a dream come true for me. This nunnery is called Karsha, or Chukshikjal, founded in 1957 and located in the Zanskar Valley in the Himalayas—a very remote place with harsh living conditions. Some call it ‘Little Tibet’ because the people are almost untouched by modernisation and practice traditional Tibetan Buddhism, as in Tibet.

These nuns practice the Gelugpa, also known as the Yellow Hat sect, of Tibetan Buddhism, the same followed by the Dalai Lama.

The total funds we are raising—8 lakh rupees—will go towards the travel, food, and accommodation for the nuns and the film crew. The rest of this experience is priceless.

Buddhist Nuns of the Himalayas
These nuns built their nunnery themselves over the last 60 or so years, stone by stone, carrying each up the mountain. In this part of the world, monks are highly respected, but women have had to fight for their spiritual freedom. It’s only in the last 60 years or so that women in this village have been able to create their own spiritual house for worship, one of which is Karsha Nunnery.

I wanted to share with the nuns where I am from and all about Auroville, and a local friend translated for me. The nuns were very interested. When I asked who would like to discover Auroville, they all wanted to! One old nun even said, “Please take me before I get too old and can’t leave the mountain.” She must have been over 80 years old.
