Virtual Panel Discussion Banners, cutouts and posters – Tamil cinema’s tryst with visual art | Saturday, 29 August, 2020 | 5 pm – 7 pm IST |
Cinema and visual art went hand in hand in the Madras skyline. Canvas paintings outside every theater in the city, posters of the classic scenes, laminated plastic photo boards on the backs of Pallavan buses, and huge billboards featuring the entire cast of a film, life size cut-outs of our favourite heroes and hand painted hoardings that dotted the stretch between Safire and Casino on Mount road was a veritable feast to the senses. Today that history is being replaced by first look online poster releases, YouTube trailers and OTT release banner ads. Join us as an eminent panel of historians, filmmakers and academicians delve into this phenomenon / heritage / history that marked a symbiosis between cinema and politics through photographs and visual art. Panellists V. Jeevananthan @jeevartist, Artist Dr. Preminda Jacob @premindajacob, Author, Art Historian and Associate Professor of art History, UMBC Rajiv Menon @dirrajivmenon, Award winning Cinematographer / Director S. Theodore Baskaran @s.theodore.baskaran, Film historian & Author Moderator Dr. Uma Vangal @uma.vangal, Fulbright Scholar, Film Professor/Historian & Film Curator |
