The Art of the Potter

Free to watch until 1 November

The final film in our Mingei Film Archive series, The Art of the Potter is a major final tribute to the lives and work of the founders of the Leach Pottery, Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada.

The Mingei Film Archive has digitally remastered this 1970 film in which Bernard Leach is interviewed in St Ives and Hamada is shown at work in Mashiko.

The Mingei Film Archive

Founded by Canadian filmmaker Marty Gross, The Mingei Film Archive is an ongoing project to restore, enhance and preserve films that document the history of Japan’s Mingei Movement and its ongoing legacy in the world of contemporary ceramics.

This project originated in 1975 when Bernard Leach gave Marty Gross the films he had made in Japan, Korea and Manchuria during 1934-35, along with several significant 16mm films he had collected over his long career.

The Mingei Film Archive now consists of over 50 hours of films on the history of pottery-making in Japan, Korea, the US and the UK. All films are digitally re-mastered and have newly created commentaries.
