The work of Subhashri Routray possesses the spontaneous harmony of a piece of music we believe we recognize, a melody that is simple and yet so complex that it must be listened to again and again in order to grasp the subtleties of its most distant chords.

The artist creates three-dimensional abstract collages from salvaged materials, recomposing, layering and weaving them together, incorporating pictorial interventions, scraping and scratching, sometimes writing on them as one writes on walls. Like a composer of symphonies, she calibrates the voice of each instrument and the moments of silence, balancing saturated or neutral fields of colour, playing with breaks in rhythm and accelerations, allowing room for time and chance.

It is an intuitive process that reveals stories, brings journeys to light, and traces maps of a geography that is both individual and universal.

By collecting paper, fabrics and discarded materials, she does not merely reclaim their damaged beauty, but also the memories and emotions of those who once created them. Each printed weave, each texture tells of an intention, a fragment of the past.

There is an echo of traditional craftsmanship in the way she assembles patterns, like a living archive. Through these fragments of existence, through her own memories and those of strangers, she gives matter a new meaning, restoring a value that takes on a collective, choral dimension. For Subhashree, there is a strong symbolic value in the way we look at our environment, and the creative act, rooted in an ecological and humanistic approach, begins the moment our attention settles on the object or substance to be reused.

Virtuosity does not interest her, nor does perfection, because our lives are imperfect and battered, and that is precisely what she wants to show: the resilience of the human being, and how we can rebuild ourselves and turn our destiny, with all its obstacles and suffering, into a magnificent road along which to move forward amid chaos. The way a visual language can favour hope, can show hardship through the prism of joy, is a choice connected to her responsibility as an artist.

By making hidden trajectories visible, by restoring diversity to its place within the fabric of becoming, she adopts a new perspective in which the artist is no longer at the centre of her own story, but deliberately becomes both a vehicle for and a participant in a shared destiny yet to unfold.
