Arikamedu was an ancient industrial port city located in the South Eastern coast of India near Pondicherry, known then as Poduke. Arikamedu lay along the eastern bank of river Ariyankuppam near the Bay of Bengal.
The city was a manufacturing hub of textiles, terracotta objects, bead jewelries and was considered as “mother of all bead centers” in the world. During its peak period, 100 BC to 100 AD,, Arikamedu was an active trading harbour, receiving ships from other ancient port cities such as Rome, Muziris and Anuradhapura for transhipment of goods to countries in South East Asia such as Indonesia, Thailand, China and rest of North Eastern part of India.
The walk at Arikamedu intends to make us discover this archeological site, little known today, and see it through the eyes of a passionate explorer.
M. Ramesh, hails from Ariyankuppam. During his early childhood his school teacher Tamizhmamani Dr. S Velmurgan took them to the Arikamedu site to explore it. This developed a deep passion in him to safeguard and bring awareness towards the true value of this place
Today he continues to guide those who are interested in knowing more about this ancient site. He has authored several papers on Arikamedu. He also works as a Technician (Photographer), Pondicherry Centre of the EFEO, Project “Hindu Temple Legends in South India”
