Performance Description: * About Time is a travelogue unfolding through anecdotes, analyses, rememberings, rumours, documents, and dreams.
-
The work explores the bodies of dancers across the Kaveri delta in peninsular India and Central Java in Indonesia, where song, gong, body, and dance take turns in the ritual churning of time.
-
Composed as 24 “time-pieces,” the work revisits themes frequented by German writer W.G. Sebald (1944-2001), including memories, histories, biographies, fictions, and photographs.
-
-
Artistic Context: * This performance is one installment in Kiran Kumār’s long-term artistic research project, “Epistolary Ancestries,” a corpus of ten open letters addressed to adopted ancestors.
-
The project reimagines the role of dance as a trifold practice of art, science, and ritual to mobilize ancestral futures.
