Synopsis: The socialist mayor of a little French town, with the help of his contacts in Paris, gets the funding to build a multimedia house, to which his main adversary the local teacher, is firmly opposed in the name of the rural environment -in particular because of the felling of a magnificent hundred-year-old tree that the construction of such a building would entail… Eric Rohmer leads us through discussions and lively dialogues of several key people to the vexed confrontation town-countryside and rurality-urbanization. Everything treated with the simplicity and naturalness to which Rohmer has accustomed us to (his film collections: Comedies and Proverbs and Tales of the Four Seasons) when he deals with important human or social problems. A lovely civilized movie, serious and funny.

Synopsis : Grâce à ses contacts à Paris, le maire socialiste d’une toute petite ville de France obtient les fonds pour construire une médiathèque. Son principal adversaire est l’instituteur local, fermement opposé au nom de l’environnement rural, notamment en raison de l’abattage d’un magnifique arbre centenaire qu’impliquerait la construction d’un tel bâtiment … Eric Rohmer nous entraîne, à travers des discussions et dialogues animés de plusieurs personnages, à l’éternelle confrontation ville-campagne et ruralité-urbanisation. Le tout traité avec la simplicité et le naturel auxquels Rohmer nous a habitués (ses collections de films: Comédies et proverbes et Contes des quatre saisons) lorsqu’il traite d’importants problèmes humains ou sociaux. Un film profond et léger, sérieux et drôle… !
