PRESS RELEASE

Soulful Adventures launches new Walking Tour of Pondicherry’s Tamil Quarter

Did you know Jawaharlal Nehru Street was once Rue Dupleix? And an old warehouse in the street still bears the old signboard from 1942?

The casual tourist in Pondicherry rarely looks beyond the beautiful beaches and the sunny French Quarter – the Tamil Quarter is mostly a hotspot for shopping. But at Soulful Adventures, we acknowledge what makes Pondicherry unique is the seamless intermingling of Tamil and French influences, which is nowhere better illustrated than in the streetscapes, stories and secrets of the Tamil Quarter.

Our first ‘Pondy Cultural Trail’ is a guided walking tour of the Tamil Quarter. The trail kicks off every Saturday in front of the Indian Coffee House on Jawaharlal Nehru Street at 4 p.m. and wraps up with tea at the Anantha Heritage Hotel on Perumal Street. A minimum of 3 persons and a maximum of 10 can be accommodated in the two-hour tour.

Markets, hidden histories and poetry

The tour includes a brief visit to the Goubert Market where tour guide C. Arulmugil will recount stories of trade, law and life in the Tamil Quarter , from decades ago. Passing through the colorful flower market that featured in Life of Pi, the tour will cover the UNESCO Heritage award-winning stretch of Vysial Street where INTACH has restored old houses with Franco-Tamil architectural characteristics. A highlight of the tour is a visit to the newly restored Mahakavi Bharathiar Museum and Research Centre for a dose of poetry, following which the trail continues to the Vedapureeswarar Temple. Guests will partake in a tea at Anantha Heritage where a traditional sweet and savory will be served.

“Most tourists make it a point to walk around the French Quarter. But there is little awareness about the historic importance of the Tami Quarter or the many untold stories here. From old houses, unique signboards and street names to local artisans, this is where you can see Pondicherry at its colourful, bustling best,” says Prasanth Joseph Peairro, Founder, Soulful Adventures.

Ashok Panda,co-convenor, INTACH, inaugurated the maiden tour on Saturday.
