![]() Tales of Confluence in India Jonathan Gil Harris in conversation with Shilpa Vijayakrishnan ![]() ![]() 12 September, 6 pm |C Click here to register As part of its ongoing theme of Creative Connections, MAP is pleased to present acclaimed author, Jonathan Gil Harris, in conversation with MAP’s Education & Outreach Department lead, Shilpa Vijayakrishnan. The session will explore Harris’ work on historical figures in India who embraced fluid identities, blurring the lines between borders geographic, cultural and religious. Underlining the need for us to examine the past in the present, it will in particular, highlight the story of the fascinating and unique mystic, Sa’id Sarmad Kashani, dubbed the ‘Jewish Sufi Yogi Courtier of the Mughals’. Jonathan Gil Harris Jonathan Gil Harris is a writer and teacher based in Delhi. He is the author of 10 books, including (most recently) Masala Shakespeare: How A Firangi Became Indian and the best-selling The First Firangis. He is currently finishing a new book called Secrets from My Mother’s Tea-Chest: The Jewish Silk Road from Europe to China and India. He was Associate Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly from 2005 to 2013, and President of the Shakespeare Society of India from 2014 to 2018. A native of New Zealand, educated in England, and resident in the US for many years, he moved to Delhi in 2011 to serve as Founding Dean and Professor of English at Ashoka University. Shilpa Vijayakrishnan Shilpa Vijayakrishnan has led the Education & Outreach Department at MAP since its conception, during the course of which she has curated over five exhibitions specially designed for younger audiences, as well as conceptualised and facilitated a range of programmes for schools, children and adults. Former editor of the Tasveer Journal, her articles have been published in publications including the eponymous print edition of the Tasveer Journal, Maharanis: Royal Women of India, Gardens of the Mind: Swapak Nayak and Gilles Bensimon and Figures in Time: Bourne & Shepherd.
