India will commemorate 75 years of independence in August 2022. On this occasion, Goethe-Instituts in South Asia are inviting entries to explore questions about what being free means to us through the medium of art, film, poetry, prose, performance and photography. Selected contributions will be published on an online platform.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Freedom is a broad term whose meaning varies depending on the context: it is often construed in a narrow manner — from the prisms of legislated rights and duties and the tussle between individual freedom and community well-being. However, when we bring to bear the artistic, cinematic, poetic and literary lens to the question of freedom, its idea becomes both expansive and delicately nuanced at once.
What makes us truly free as individuals? What does it take to break free from the shackles of expectations and conditioning? How do we negotiate the labels that seek to define us? When layers of predetermined identity are stripped away, what makes us truly ourselves?
The Covid-19 pandemic brought upon us unprecedented restrictions — on movement, travel, human interactions and celebrations. What role can imagination and art play in setting us free when the world around us is constricted? What are the means we have to transcend our circumstances and rewrite our stories as individuals and societies?
We are inviting entries to explore such larger questions about what being free means to us through the medium of art, film, poetry, prose, performance and photography.
