The Shock of the New is a 1980 documentary television series written and presented by Robert Hughes; its combination of insight, wit and accessibility are still widely praised. The series consists of 8 episodes each an hour long and addresses the development of modern art since the Impressionists.
Episode 2: The Powers That Be [Shapes of Dissent] examines the relationship between modern art and authority. Dada, Constructivism, Futurism. Architecture of power. World War I and industrialised death. Exile and intellectuals as a class.
